A decade ago, Anthony Barry was playing at a lower division club. Today, he is focused supporting the England manager win the World Cup next summer. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines commenced as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his calling.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a reputation for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career included elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the top in his words.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their methods include player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the whole ground and we dedicate many of our days on. We must not only to stay ahead with developments but to surpass them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“There are 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; instead. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach should represent the best aspects of English football,” he comments. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, pressing from the front. But in the middle area on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared now. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are really trying to speed up play across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

Barry’s hunger for improvement is relentless. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried over the speaking requirement, as his cohort included stars including former players. So, to build his skill set, he entered tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He earned his license as the best in his year, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of nearly all assistants but not Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
