British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
