Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor stated when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

Newsom's current term as governor ends in early 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he cautioned that any determination is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the current federal leadership, employing his social media accounts and championing a initiative that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a weekend segment on Fox News. Duffy disclosed plans to pull federal funds from California and suggested revoking the authority to issue CDLs.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," Duffy declared, following a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that caused three deaths and injured individuals.

The governor's team highlighted that the federal government had renewed the worker's status on several occasions, which permitted him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had before announced he was holding back $40m from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team retorted in a recent statement responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects

A recent survey revealed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, public support for the governor has grown to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an mean of over 40% to under 40%.

In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The idea that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "No one can say? I await who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
