Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
A minimum of 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who are known at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
