Miami's Eileen Higgins Elected as First Democrat Leader of Miami in 30 Years.
Democratic candidate Eileen Higgins has triumphed in the election to lead Miami in Florida, marking the historic occasion a Democratic candidate has won the office in three decades.
A one-time commissioner, Higgins secured the runoff victory by securing fifty-nine percent of the vote tally, overcoming her GOP rival Emilio Gonzalez, who was endorsed by former President Trump and received nearly 41% of the vote, based on election data.
"Voters picked a different path... you chose capability over confusion," Higgins said to supporters.
Higgins' victory continues a streak of recent wins for the Democratic Party.
A Pioneering Achievement on Several Levels
With her victory, Higgins, 61 years old, also is now the initial woman to be chosen as mayor, according to reports.
Higgins stated her victory "marks the beginning of the task before us" and pledged to address the problems Miami is grappling with.
"Our administration will run a city that is for all its residents," she added.
Campaign Focus and Contrast with the Administration
Running on issues including immigration policy and cost-effective homes, she aimed to differentiate her leadership style against that of President Trump.
In a recent interview, Higgins said: "The President and I have contrasting points of view on how we should treat our residents, many of whom are immigrants."
During the Miami mayoral debate, she described the president's immigration enforcement "inhumane and cruel."
She pledged to collaborate with the Trump administration on issues where they can reach agreement, but "when we disagree, I'll speak out," she stated.
Political Backing and the Election Path
Although the election was officially not party-affiliated, Higgins earned the endorsement of multiple influential Democrats, including ex-cabinet official Pete Buttigieg.
In addition to backing from Trump, Gonzalez was also backed by the Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis.
Higgins now takes over from departing mayor Francis Suarez, who attempted a run for the presidential nomination as a Republican.
Part of a Larger Wave
Leading up to Higgins' success, the Democratic Party notched major victories in the first major elections of the President's new term in recent weeks.
