Mikel Arteta feels assured that his squad can keep managing with player absences after disclosing that forward Kai Havertz will not return for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The Germany international has been out for months following knee surgery. Initially expected to return sooner, the manager stated the player encountered a problem when increasing his recovery and was unable to move forward “to the next level.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This development creates a selection headache for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role last weekend, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly after a fitness issue as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also available following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Persist

More doubts affect defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Chelsea match. As a result, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably continue in central defence for the table-toppers.

Arteta feels the substantial investment on squad depth ahead of this season has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to deal with such unavailability.

Questioned if increased squad depth was helping their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Yes, because this season has been worse in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in different positions, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at this level. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Star

Speaking about the delay noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “He followed all protocols. He failed to advance to the required step and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, personally, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his personality. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”
