Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the acclaimed police drama

The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
