Tragedy Occurs as Unintentional Detonation at Police Station in Indian-administered Kashmir Results in Nine Fatalities
A catastrophic detonation at a security post in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir has resulted in the loss of nine persons and wounding to thirty-two additional people, according to police declarations.
The incident happened when a cache of confiscated explosives unintentionally detonated during processing activities.
Chronology of Events
The explosion took place on Friday evening at the Nowgam security post, where explosive materials taken from Faridabad region in the northern state of Haryana province were being kept briefly.
Area law enforcement head declared that the detonation substances were pending scientific analysis when a "extremely tragic" mishap during management led to their blast at approximately 11:20 PM local.
Police Announcements
Security forces asserted that this was an "accidental detonation" and not a terror incident. "Alternative theories regarding the reason of this occurrence is unnecessary," highlighted the security director during a journalist meeting.
The law enforcement facility suffered extensive destruction from the blast, with neighboring structures also being influenced by the intense detonation.
Impact and Victims
Numerous cars were "covered in blaze and turned into burned shells, with wreckage spread across the location," according to police accounts.
"The power of the explosion was so powerful that some human remains were retrieved from adjacent homes, approximately 100-200 meters distant the security post," reported an official source.
Most of the casualties were security officials, along with technical investigation team, two crime scene photographers, and a garment worker who was with the team.
Government Reaction
The territory's Lieutenant Governor expressed commiserations and declared that an inquiry had been commissioned into the devastating event.
"I have commissioned a probe to establish the reason of the inadvertent detonation. Deeply anguished by the death of valuable individuals due to exceptionally devastating inadvertent detonation at Nowgam police station in Srinagar. My commiserations to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of the injured," stated the official on online channels.
