Zohran Mamdani confirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central issue, did not confirm he would live there immediately following his electoral win in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will always live within me and my work," he added.
A Contentious Issue
In his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
